College Football:
It may have been late August, but Saturday’s season opener had a playoff feel to it.
Mt. SAC held off their visitors from Cerritos College, 21-17, in a game they never trailed.
The Mounties had an opportunity, for all intents and purposes, of putting the game away with a fourth-quarter drive.
However, a bad snap at the Cerritos 1-yard line that would have given MSAC an 11-point lead allowed the Falcons another shot.
But the Mounties ‘D’ made a stop, forced a punt and the Mt. SAC offense ran the clock out.
Former Long Beach Millikan quarterback JP Mialovski had an effective debut.
Mialovski completed 24-of-32 for 190 yards.
That included TD passes of 21 and 7 yards to Jordyn Harris.
And Mialovski didn’t turn the ball over.
Harris had game highs in receptions (8), receiving yards (68) and TD catches (2).
Damari Wiggins caught three passes for 47 yards and Aidan Leyland had three receptions for 21 yards.
Elijah Tehe carried the ball seven times for 70 yards, which was 19 yards more than six Cerritos running backs combined.
Tehe also put the game on ice with a spirited run on 3rd-and-8.
His first down allowed the clock to run to the two-minute timeout, and then the Mounties took a knee to bleed the remaining 120 seconds.
Jamel Sly gained 68 yards on eight carries, and that included a 15-yard TD run on Mt. SAC’s opening drive of the game.
Nathan Maggiore led the Mounties ‘D’ with seven tackles, including two for-loss.
Ofa Falekaono totaled six tackles and one for-loss.
Solomon Tripline had five tackles, while Tamir Williams, Lono Chouteau and Elias Malapit provided four tackles apiece.
Mt. SAC dominated in all the major categories.
They had a 25-12 advantage in first downs, 160-51 in rushing and 374 yards of total offense as compared to 243 for the Falcons.
Up next: The Mounties travel to San Diego Mesa next Saturday at 6.
On Thursday, the Olympians dropped a 44-6 beatdown on East Los Angeles in their 2026 season opener.
