Rio Hondo Prep, unlike in previous seasons, is going to have to scratch and claw their way to victory.
You might read it 100 times, but the 2026 graduating class will go down as the most successful in program history thanks to three consecutive CIF-SS championships.
The program had gotten used to relying on game-changing athletes to break off 80-yard TDs for the last several years.
That won’t be the case in 2026.
Mark Carson and his staff, though, arguably the best in the SGV, will tap into their strengths weekly and exploit a weakness of Rio Hondo Prep opponents.
And perhaps having to fight so hard for 48 minutes will make RHP’s wins even more satisfying.
In week zero, the Kares cruised to a 35-0 victory at Schurr.
And tonight, RHP edged their visitors from Troy, 7-0, in their home opener at Kare Park in front of a large crowd for both teams.
The game’s lone score came with 1:52 to play in the first quarter.
On a fourth-and-8 play, Donald Scheffler found Elias Har for a 19-yard touchdown.
In the waning moments of the game, Troy drove the ball to the 16-yard line.
And on a third-and-4, Har intercepted Mason Mays in the back of the north end zone to all but seal the win.
Late in the first half, the Warriors had four chances from within the Kares 10-yard line, but the boys from Arcadia stood their ground.
In two games, Rio Hondo Prep has yet to surrender any points, and they’ve combined to allow just 313 yards of total offense in those wins.
The Kares have now won 14 consecutive regular season games dating back to 2024.
Not everything went as planned.
RHP lost two fumbles, including one in the red zone.
The Warriors had a 3-1 advantage in the turnover battle.
And Troy edged the Kares, 202-195 in total offense.
Both teams carried the ball 36 times, but RHP had a slight 157-121 advantage.
Matthew Montez had a game-high 88 yards on 18 carries, and Christian Lee carried the ball 11 times for 65 yards.
Scheffler completed just 4-of-12 for 38 yards and a pick.
However, his scoring strike to Har turned out to be the difference.
Har finished with 23 receiving yards on two catches.
Fifteen separate Kares defenders had at least one tackle.
Nathaniel Riley (12), Aiden Delgadillo (10), Troy Seto (10), Christian Lee (7), Carlo Castaneda (6), Vincent Reyes (5) and Nic Harrington (4) combined for 54 tackles.
Up next: The Kares travel to Quartz Hill next Friday at 7.
The Royals (1-1) were on the wrong end of a 35-0 decision at Mission Hills.
