Baseball:
Rio Hondo Prep had the opportunity on Tuesday to knock their rival out of the Prep League title chase.
Poly entered one-game back of Flintridge Prep in the Prep League standings and both the Panthers and Wolves have one game left.
And both of which happen to be against RHP this week.
Jason Mayo and Anderson Lang pitched their butts off, but it was Poly and Mayo that claimed a 1-0 victory.
Mayo scattered three hits, didn’t walk anyone and struck out seven Kares’ batters.
Ryan Olivas and Raymond Montez singled and Jack Van Cleve doubled for RHP.
Anderson Lang also went the distance, allowing one run on four hits.
Lang didn’t walk a batter and struck out five.
Mayo helped his own cause with a double and scored the game’s lone run on a sac fly off the bat of Jake Sherwindt in the top of the sixth inning.
Adam Arther collected two singles and Sean Asperger had one base hit for the Panthers.
Up next: Rio Hondo Prep closes out the 2021 regular season on Friday when they host first-place Flintridge Prep.
If the Kares defeat the Wolves, Poly will win the Prep League championship.
One final stat to show how close Mayo and Lang’s performances were: Mayo threw 79 pitches, while Lang tossed 81.
