Baseball:
Without much success offensively, Charter Oak pitching has had to carry their share and then some.
And no one has played better when needed than Zack Escalera.
Escalera went the distance and tossed a three-hit shutout in a 1-0 Valle Vista League victory over Diamond Ranch.
The Chargers junior issued just one walk and struck out 12 D-Ranch batters.
Escalera needed 91 pitches to finish what he started.
Saul Parada, Hector Cruz and Sebastian De La Rocha had one single apiece to account for the Diamond Ranch offense.
Benny Aquino also pitched well enough to win.
Aquino went 6 2/3 innings and he allowed one run on three hits.
Aquino issued two walks and registered six strikeouts.
Julian Salmon led off the bottom of the seventh with a single.
Three batters later, Moses Medrano’s two-out RBI double gave the Chargers the walk-off 1-0 victory.
Jorge Aceves walked, singled and scored the game’s lone run.
