Baseball:
Monrovia’s mission on Wednesday was twofold.
First, the Wildcats were attempting to avoid a three-game Rio Hondo League sweep at the hands of first-place San Marino.
Secondly, if Brad Blackmore’s boys wanted a realistic shot at winning another RHL title, they would need a win over the Titans to close the gap.
Coach B handed the ball to his star senior, Andrew Cito.
And in spite of not having his best stuff, Cito did what great competitors do.
He grinded out a 2-0 victory by tossing an eight-hit shutout.
The lanky right-hander walked one and struck out four SMHS batters.
Cito needed just 76 pitches to finish what he started, and 49 of those 76 went for strikes.
JJ Wilson singled and doubled, and Liam Fossan had a pair of singles for San Marino.
Mikey Yessaian walked and singled, while Tomas Bilvado and Chase Mena had one single apiece.
Wilson got the loss after allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits over six innings.
Wilson walked two and fanned one MHS batter.
Troy Grise walked and his solo HR in the third inning gave the Wildcats a 2-0 lead.
Isaias Hernandez walked and scored.
Micah Maljian and Noah Ellison had one single apiece to account for the rest of the Monrovia offense.
As both program’s head into the second half of league (six games), SMHS leads Temple City by one-half a game, and they hold a one-game advantage over the Wildcats.
Up next: Monrovia and San Marino will both be in action on Monday.
The Wildcats travel to La Canada at 3:30, and the Titans host El Rancho.
