Boys Basketball:
Just minutes after the Glendora girls edged Bonita by three points in a Palomares League first-place showdown, everyone expected something similar in the game between the first-place Bearcats and the second-place Tartans.
But GHS played one of its better games of the season, and BHS didn’t play anywhere near what they’re capable of, and Glendora ran away with a 71-47 victory to end the first round of Palomares League play.
Ayala, Bonita and Glendora are now tied at 4-1 atop the league standings.
GHS led 35-26 at the half, and they outscored BHS, 36-21, in the second half to pull away.
Colton Gray had a big night for Glendora with a game-high 21 points, eight rebounds, four steals and two assists.
Elijah Regan hit a game-high four 3-pointers and finished with 15 points, three assists and three steals.
Bonita’s Colton Perez had three 3-pointers and led his program with 14 points.
But GHS held the Bearcats star senior to just two second-half points.
Naasir Ainsworth chipped in with eight points, while Hunter Smith and Jake Quintana had six points apiece.
Smith hit a pair of 3’s.
Glendora got eight points apiece from Sebastian Demano and Max Hilgenfeldt.
Demano had a four-point play in the third quarter, where he made a 3, got fouled and converted his free-throw attempt.
GHS coach Gordon Hamlow knows that Tim Godley’s program is too well coached and too talented not to rebound from this disappointment and battle the Tartans and Bulldogs to the wire for the Palomares League championship.
Up next: Glendora and Bonita will both be in action on Friday.
The Tartans meet up with Ayala at Walnut High to start the second half of Palomares League play, and the Bearcats host Colony at 5:30.
The tip is set for 7 for both games.
