Football:

What a game.

Although Northview outlasted Covina, 37-35, both the Colts and Vikings will benefit from having met up in week three.

CHS outscored NHS, 14-0, and 14-6, in the first and third quarters, in Friday’s back-and-forth shootout at Covina District Field.

But Northview used a 17-7 advantage in the fourth period to escape with a two-point victory.

NHS had a 274-41 advantage on the ground and Angel Barraza was huge for the Vikings.

Barraza rushed for 198 yards on 19 carries.

He scored on TD runs of 22, 27, 45 and 1 yard.

Barraza’s 1-yard TD in the fourth quarter gave Northview a 37-28 lead.

Keanu Tauvao gained 81 yards on 18 carries.

Erik Jimenez completed 10-of-16 for 186 yards, and that included a 31-yard score to Dwayne Thompson in the fourth quarter.

Following the Jimenez to Thompson TD, Juan Alcaraz would run in for a 2-point conversion, and the game was tied at 28-28.

Thompson caught five passes for 110 yards.

Joaquin Barragan led the Covina ground game with 33 yards on six carries.

Barragan scored on TD runs of 5 and 3 yards.

Jake Duronslet continued his excellence for Covina, completing 17-of-29 for 267 yards.

Duronslet hit Abraham Perez on a 31-yard TD to get the Colts on the board, and his 5-yard scoring strike to Adrian Rachal gave CHS a 28-14 lead in the third quarter.

Duronslet also scored on a 10-yard run to get Covina to within 37-35 in the fourth.

Perez had a monster night, catching eight passes for 189 yards.

Rachal caught four passes for 45 yards.

Up next: The Vikings host Monrovia (1-1) on Thursday, and the Colts travel to La Salle (2-2) on Friday.

Quotable:

Northview senior, Angel Barraza: “It meant a lot beating a rival. We gutted out a tough win and came back from 14 points down on two separate occasions. The team is asking a lot from me and I don’t want to let them down. I know I have to win my one-on-one match ups. I don’t put a lot of pressure on myself. I just go out and do everything I can to help us win games. I think the difference between winning and losing on Friday was we played with more heart and showed a lot of grit.”
