Baseball:
Charter Oak had a less than ideal start to the 2023 postseason.
The Chargers picked up their bats in the top of the third inning in Irvine and trailed Woodbridge, 4-0, on Friday afternoon.
COHS, however, rallied for three runs in the third and got seven more in the sixth.
The Chargers prevailed, 11-5, and secured Elias Chavez his 100th win as the Chargers head coach.
Woodbridge got five runs on five hits off Diego Vasquez during the first two innings.
Athen Malone took over and shut the Warriors out over the final five innings.
Malone allowed just two hits, didn’t issue a walk and struck out six.
Matthew Kuromota singled, doubled and scored.
Chase Quezada singled twice and scored.
Anthony De Marco had a double and an RBI.
Brandon Gramlich doubled and drove in a pair of runs.
Kuromoto got the loss, allowing seven runs (one earned) on six hits over 5 2/3 innings.
He walked four and struck out three COHS batters.
If Malone’s dominance on the mound wasn’t enough, wait until you hear what he did with his bat.
Malone went 3-for-4, with a double, two-run HR and three RBIs.
Vasquez doubled, scored and drove in three runs.
Chris Gonzalez walked, singled twice and scored a pair of runs.
Julian Salmon went 2-for-4 with two runs.
Diego Ortiz walked, singled, scored and had an RBI.
Moses Medrano had an RBI double.
Nathan Arevalos walked, singled and scored two runs.
Josiah Martinez and Zach Escalera walked and scored one run apiece.
Up next: The Chargers host South Hills on Tuesday.
The Huskies (21-6) shut out Great Oak, 6-0, on Friday.
Quotable:
Charter Oak coach, Elias Chavez: “Every year we play a really tough schedule to prepare us for situations like today. We fell behind early, but our guys were putting good swings on the ball from the first inning on, so we just had to keep it close. Athen came out of the pen and from his first pitch he was locked in and dealt until the end of the game. And his home run after Vasquez’s 3-run double was the final blow we needed. It was a great game against a tough team, and we look forward to another one on Tuesday.”
Charter Oak senior, Athen Malone: “We’ve been in battles all season and we knew we just had keep battling and good things were going to happen.”
