Badminton:

Thanks to Arcadia coach Mike Stiles for this report:

Our program started in the Spring of 2016.

We went 4-8 that year, and lost in the first round of the CIF-SS playoffs.

In 2017, we joined the Almont League and have won every league title since.

We lost in the quarterfinals of the CIF Division 1 playoffs in our second season.

Since 2018, we have played in every Open Division final, losing to Diamond Bar in 2018 and 2019.

In 2021 and 2022, the Apaches got payback, defeating those same Brahmas for the Open Division championship.

Our cumulative record, after yesterday’s victory, is 100-15.

And from 2018-2022, Arcadia has won 84 of the 86 matches they’ve played.

Our team has been led by senior captains, Andrea Lou and Kathy Liu.

Lou and Lin are now the two-time defending CIF-SS Girls doubles champions.

But every Apaches’ player has played a significant role in their overwhelming success.

And that list includes: juniors Matthew Li and Andrew Wu in boys singles, and junior Reanne Chan (also a defending CIFSS champion) in girls singles.

Yesterday, Matthew won both of his singles matches and both of his mixed doubles matches (with his partner, Reanne Chan), including the title-clinching 11th match victory.

For those who don’t fully understand how Badminton is played, including this writer, a dual match involves 21 individual matches.

There are four boys and girls singles and doubles matches, and five mixed doubles.

Reanne and Andrew Wu both went 3-1.

Senior captain Pauline Tong has also been instrumental in the success of our program over the last several years, as has senior Emmery Chang.

Andrea, Kathy, Pauline and Emmery have all been four-year varsity members.

Yesterday’s match was always close.

While we never trailed, we were never up by more than two matches until the very end.

After the first four matches, it was 2-2.

It was nip and tuck through 9-9.

In the 19th match, Kathy Liu/Andrea Lou won the 1st set against Ariel Shau/Emily Liu 21-14.

Ariel/Emily won the second set 21-15 setting up the decisive third set.

Kathy/Andrea trailed 9-13, but came back to win the set 21-16, and gave us a 10-9 lead.

With only 2 mixed doubles matches remaining, we needed only one win.

The mixed pair of Matthew Li/Reanne Chan clinched the victory with a 24-22, 21-17 win over Cody Ma/Ariel Shau.

Andrew Wu/Andrea Lou closed out the scoring with a 21-8, 19-21, 22-20 win over Kodi Lee/Jedd Perea for the final margin of 12-9.
