Football:
Claremont entered week seven’s Valle Vista League showdown with their visitors from Chino some 70 spots behind the Cowboys in the most recent MaxPreps state rankings and as the underdog according to the Calpreps oddsmakers.
The Wolfpack, though, trailed just once in a 28-25 victory.
In fact, CHS took a 28-10 lead into the final nine minutes of the fourth quarter.
But to their credit, Chino fought back on Friday in a three-and-a-half hour game when Raymond Chia rumbled in from two yards out with 5:51 to play.
Brandon Coronado, the Claremont quarterback, put the game on ice with four consecutive first downs and it evaporated all three of the Cowboys timeouts and the final 351 seconds of the contest.
With three games to play in the regular season, the Wolfpack join Alta Loma as the only 2-0 teams in the VVL.
And they face a Los Osos program next Thursday that is 1-6, and the Grizzlies have been outscored 242-86.
Claremont got off to a great start.
On the first offensive play of the game, Quest Cobb took a Coronado pass 80 yards for a 7-0 lead.
Chino scored the next 10 points.
Hayden Hsieh booted a 26-yard field goal.
And with 22 seconds left in the first half, Donavon Chavez hooked up with Troy Abandy on an 11-yard TD.
Claremont, however, scored 21 consecutive third-quarter points.
Benji Palmer and Coronado scored on TD runs of 11 and 6 yards, respectively.
On a second-and-20 play, Coronado hit Landon Davis on a 79-yard TD to extend the lead to 28-10.
Coronado was 15-of-27 for 312 yards.
He tossed the TD passes to Cobb and Davis and was picked once.
The senior captain also gained 80 yards on 16 carries.
Davis rushed for 17 yards on five carries.
And he totaled 120 yards receiving on four catches.
Cobb finished with two catches for 84 yards and the long, game-opening score.
Chino’s Chavez completed 14-of-35 pass attempts for 160 yards.
Chavez hit Troy Abandy on TD strikes of 11 and 9 yards.
Ivan Rodriguez caught four passes for 58 yards in the loss.
Ethan Ford, a CHS soccer player, is making a difference in his first year on the football team.
Ford was 4-for-4 on his extra-point attempts, as well as a number of touchbacks on his kickoffs.
Up next: The Wolfpack will host a struggling Los Osos program next Thursday at 7.
The Grizzlies failed to score in Friday’s 35-0 home loss to Alta Loma.
