Golden West had statistical advantages in a number of categories in Thursday’s National-Central Conference showdown with their visitors from Pasadena City College.
However, PCC led in the only stat that matters, the scoreboard.
The Lancers headed home from Surf City with a 17-7 victory.
PCC improved to 3-0, and they handed the Rustlers their first loss in conference play.
Pasadena City College got on the board early, as Xavier Buckles hooked up with Cam Mitchell on a 91-yard TD pass at 11:32 of the first quarter.
Fifty-six seconds later, Andy Carballo doubled the lead with a 22-yard pick-six.
Golden West’s lone score came on a 1-yard TD run from Ardwon Morris early in the second half.
With 3:11 to play, Zack Hutchinson’s 33-yard field goal gave PCC a two-score lead and that was more than enough for the Lancers.
The Rustlers had advantages in first downs (19-10), rushing yards (211-65) and total offense (318-243).
But two Golden West quarterbacks combined to throw four interceptions, including the pick-six.
Buckles went 16-of-24 for 178 yards.
He tossed the long TD pass and didn’t turn the ball over.
Buckles also led PCC with 37 yards on seven carries.
The Rustlers ‘D’ held Dom Ezeonye to 21 yards on 16 carries.
Mitchell had game highs in receptions (5) and receiving yards (114), including the TD catch.
Dmariya Thomas (2-for-20), Jayden Spann (2-for-18), Raul Dorantes (2-for-13) and Mark Wilson (2-for-5) combined for eight catches for 56 yards.
Zack Hutchinson was 2-for-2 on extra points, 1-for-1 on field goals and four kickoffs for 260 yards.
Nathan Yarahmadi led the Lancers with nine tackles and he picked one pass.
Caeden Holcomb totaled seven tackles, while Eddie Plaza had six tackles.
Arturo Ayers finished with five tackles.
Carballo had four tackles to go with his pick-six.
Quishawn Stanford tallied four tackles and one interception of his own.
Zamarion Frazier Blanco picked one pass and contributed three tackles.
Gio Livingston and Peter Aguilar provided four tackles apiece for the PCC defense.
Up next: The Lancers will host Cerritos next Saturday at 6.
