Baseball:

The Travis Kelly era is officially underway at Los Osos High School.

In just his second year, the 37-year-old Grizzlies’ skipper led the program to their most wins (19) since 2013.

What makes that feat even more impressive is that Kelly wasn’t officially hired until just two weeks before the 2023 regular season got underway.

LOHS saw its season come to an end on Tuesday in the second round of the CIF-SS Division 4 playoffs at Cerritos High School.

But not before rallying late and forcing Cerritos to earn a 6-5 victory in 10 innings.

Osos scored once in the top of the sixth and they got two more in the seventh to force extra innings.

Johan Gibbs went seven innings, and he allowed three runs (one earned) on five hits.

Gibbs issued a pair of walks and struck out two.

Jack Lake got the win after going three innings and allowing two runs on four hits and one walk.

Wyatt Mohler had four of Los Osos’ nine hits.

The sophomore went 4-for-5 with a run and one RBI.

He scored on a Roberto Topete sac fly in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game at 5-5.

Reagan Samples hit a solo HR.

Hunter Meyer had an RBI single in the third to pull the Grizzlies to within 3-2 of Cerritos.

Justin Yeutter went 2-for-5 and scored.

Topete drew a pair of walks and had the big RBI on that seventh-inning sac fly.

Joshua Chairez and Jake Monsen scored one run each for LOHS.

Austin Ziello singled in Tuesday’s loss.

Gavin Loeb Keene, Connor Donlin, Aidan Cube and Wyatt Mohler all pitched for the Grizzlies.

Mohler got the loss in spite of allowing just one run on three hits over 4 2/3 innings.

He walked three and fanned four Cerritos batters.

Braxton Reed went 3-for-4 with a run and one RBI.

Johan Gibbs walked, doubled and drove in three runs.

Justin Sagun drew a pair of walks and scored.

Dalton Chi walked, singled twice and scored a pair of runs.

Carter Chi drew a pair of walks and scored.

Fabian Mejia walked and had an RBI single.

The immediate future is bright for this young program.

After a second-place finish in the SGV’s most competitive (Baseline) league, LOHS returns 20 of their 32 players listed on their MaxPreps roster, including many of their key contributors.

Quotable:

Los Osos coach, Travis Kelly: “First off, I’d like to take a moment and thank my beautiful wife Morgan, and my kids (Jack & Emma) for allowing me to do what I love. Without their support, I wouldn’t be able to do what I do. I’m extremely proud of the way we competed yesterday. Although the scoreboard did not reflect the result we wanted, I’m proud of the heart we showed every pitch of every inning.

This is a special group of boys who bought into our philosophy of working hard, not cutting corners, and playing for the team first, rather than ourselves. As one of the founding members of this program, I’m proud of the way the Grizzly name has been restored. We are excited about our future and the offseason starts today.”
