College Baseball:

The Mt. SAC offense has rightfully gotten a lot of credit for the Mounties success in 2024.

MSAC has won 16 of their last 18 games, and they outscored their opponents by a combined margin of 144-90 over that stretch.

This weekend, however, it was all about the Mounties pitching staff.

MSAC allowed three total runs in its two-game sweep of Allan Hancock in a first-round best-of-three regional playoff series.

On Friday, Matt Lorenzano went the distance in a 5-1 victory.

And today, Kyle Calzadiaz, Matt Viveros and Jaden Mackowiak teamed up on the mound in a 12-2 victory over the Bulldogs.

Calzadiaz went 5 1/3 innings to earn the win, allowing two runs on three hits.

He issued three walks and struck out six.

Viveros provided 2 2/3 scoreless innings in relief, surrendering two hits and striking out one.

Mackowiak got the final three outs without any damage.

He didn’t allow a hit, walked one, and fanned one Hancock batter.

Blake Edgmon walked and had an RBI single.

Gavin Long went 2-for-3 with a walk and scored.

Tommy Kendlinger singled and scored.

Julien Sepulveda drove in a run on a sac fly.

Bridger Coleman walked and singled.

And speaking of the Mt. SAC offense, they had a 15-5 advantage in base hits, and they hit for the cycle as a team.

The Mounties pounded Cooper Bagby for seven runs (six earned) on 12 hits over 6 2/3 innings.

Bagby walked two, fanned five and suffered just his second loss of the season.

Joey Rossetti went 3-for-5 with one run and two RBIs.

Bryan Bradshaw walked, singled twice, scored a pair of runs and drove in two from the leadoff spot.

Blake Hagerty singled, scored twice and had a two-run triple.

Daniel Briones walked, singled, doubled and scored two runs.

Andrew Ramirez singled and scored.

Diego Ortiz singled and hit a solo HR.

Ty Thomas went 2-for-5.

Kaden Moeller walked, had an RBI single and scored.

Gibby Morales walked with the bases loaded and scored a pair of runs.

Up next: The Mounties advance to the Super Regionals next weekend at Palomar College.

Palomar and Mt. SAC will battle the Glendale-Cuesta winner in a double-elimination format.

Glendale and Cuesta are tied at 4-4 in the top of the fifth inning, but rained forced the game to be delayed until Sunday at 1.

Quotable:

Mt. SAC coach, John Knott: “Kyle (Calzadiaz) has overpowering stuff at this level and he mixed his pitches well from the get-go. If we didn’t get a call or make plays behind him, he didn’t let it bother him. Viveros and Mackowiak both pitched well. It’s not super easy to come in and relieve Calzadiaz, and both of our guys did a great job of contrasting what Kyle does. Diego Ortiz has been one of the reasons we’ve been playing so well over the last 18 games. He’s been working hard at practice and pushing for a while. I’m really happy for our guys, and we’re looking forward to going to Palomar.”
