Baseball:
Thanks to a 1-0 victory over Rancho Cucamonga on Saturday at LoanMart Field, Damien enters the final week of the regular season with a one-half game lead over second-place Los Osos.
The Spartans got some help from Etiwanda, who edged the Grizzlies, 3-2, on Saturday night.
Rudy O’Dell went 5 2/3 innings and allowed just one hit.
O’Dell walked three and fanned eight RCHS batters to earn the win.
Troy Lopez got the final four outs to secure the shutout and the save.
Lopez allowed one hit, walked one and struck out a pair of Cougars.
Brock Foulds and Derek Almeda had one single apiece to account for the RCHS offense.
Isaac Gonzales got the loss after going 4 2/3 innings and allowing just one run on six hits.
Gonzales issued four walks and struck out three.
Preston Anderson provided 1 1/3 scoreless and hitless inning in relief.
Johnson didn’t issue a walk and struck out a pair of Spartans.
The lone run of the game came on a two-out RBI single by Elius Kelly in the fifth inning to score Matthew Flores.
Nikko Paoletto singled and doubled.
Jaden Kidder went 2-for-3.
Eli Bechtel drew a pair of walks.
