Baseball:
After a slow start to the 2024 season (3-5), Damien has rebounded well, and they find themselves alone atop the Baseline League standings.
Two days after a 7-1 victory at Chino Hills in the Baseline League opener, the Spartans defeated the Huskies, 3-2, in dramatic fashion.
Niko Paoletto hit a solo HR off Perry Johnson in the sixth inning, to pull Damien to within 2-1.
Eli Bechtel led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk.
Andrew Carter followed with a single.
With the potential tying winning runs on base, AJ Lamonda called for a sac bunt.
The Huskies attempted to get the lead runner at third, but an error allowed the Spartans to tie the game at 2-2.
After an intentional walk to load the bases, Julian Hines hit a line drive to center that fell for a hit.
Johnson got the loss after allowing the three runs (one earned) on two hits and two walks.
Brody Buoncristiani had shut out Damien through five innings.
Buoncristiani allowed just one hit, walked two and fanned three DHS batters.
Paoletto finished 2-for-3, with the run and RBI.
Carter singled twice and scored.
Nathan Ries went 4 2/3 innings for Damien, and he allowed one run on six hits.
Ries walked three and struck out three CHHS batters.
Gage Wiese surrendered one run on three hits over 1 2/3 innings.
Andrew Torres got the final two outs for the Spartans.
Brady Stull singled twice, scored and had one RBI.
Jackson Gray walked, doubled and drove in a run.
Cannon Billingsley walked and singled.
Favian Vazquez doubled, and Colton Fox had two singles.
Buoncristiani singled and scored.
Up next: The Huskies host the Spartans on Friday at 3:15 to close out their three-game set.
