Boys Basketball:

A famous pro wrestler used to say, “to be the man, you’ve got to beat the man.”

And for years, ‘the man’ in the Baseline League has been the Etiwanda Eagles.

But on Thursday night, Damien won an outright Baseline League championship by defeating Etiwanda, 61-49, in a game they controlled throughout.

The Spartans led 28-15 at the half.

It’s the program’s first outright title since the 2011-12 season.

In the biggest game of their season thus far, the largest player on the court loomed large.

Damien 7-foot junior Nate Garcia had 28 points to lead all scorers.

Garcia had at least six points in each of the four quarters, including 10 in the second period and eight in the fourth.

Eli Garner chipped in with 11 points, and Xavier Clinton had nine.

Amare Campbell led Etiwanda with 22 points.

Carrington Pierce contributed nine points, and Jaidon Nassar and Christian Harris finished with seven points apiece in the loss.

Up next: Damien and Etiwanda will find out their playoff opponent on Sunday at noon.
