Football:

West Valley started and finished strong.

The Mustangs scored 15 points in the first quarter and 14 more in the fourth to hand Maranatha a 43-24 home loss.

Maranatha game notes from third-year coach, Rand Holdren:

We came out on fire and scored on our first two drives.

First drive: we threw four passes in a row for 5, 7, 10 and a 38 yard-TD to Niko Vergara.

Quarterback Luke McNulty played really well, and is starting to get some confidence.

Carter Shupper recovered a fumble, and MHS turned that into another TD to take a 14-0 lead.

West Valley went down and scored to get to within 14-7.

After an interception, they scored again, including a 2-point conversion, and WVHS had a 15-14, first quarter lead.

The first quarter had a lot of fireworks going on, as we packed the bleachers with a full house at The Keith Family Field.

They added another TD on a nine-play drive to extend their advantage to 22-14.

Luke McNulty, though, led us in our two-minute offense, and he found Bradley Lociano on an 18-yard TD just before halftime.

In the second half, we ran out of gas as they began to chew clock with their run game.

Notables in the stat department:
Luke McNulty: 19-28, 234 yards, 2 TDs passing, 1 Rushing
Nico Vergara: 8 catches, 100 yards, 1 TD rec
Carter Shupper: 13 tackles, 1 forced fumble and recovery
Jake Neely and Dejohn Jones: 7 tackles apiece

Quotable:

Maranatha coach, Rand Holdren: “Hats off to West Valley, who were a disciplined team that did what they did well. We started strong and just ran out of gas. We have been doing a lot of team building these first two weeks and learning what it means to play for each other. Despite the loss, we made a significant turn and we will be fine moving forward.”

Up next: The Minutemen will host Garey on Friday at 7.
