Football:

South Hills didn’t just open the 2023 season with a victory.

They did so in dominant fashion.

The Huskies took control early, and pummeled their host from Nogales, 49-6, on Thursday night.

South Hills got 14 in the first quarter, and they put the game away with 28 second-quarter points.

The second half was played with a running clock.

What had to be incredibly satisfying for Huskies’ coach Jacob Calderon, was the fact that SHHS had a balanced offensive attack, and the defense ‘flew to the ball and had a ton of gang tackles,” he said.

South Hills two-sport star (baseball & football), Matt Moreno, who just committed to Loyola Marymount, had a 70-yard rushing TD, and a 30-yard catch-and-run for another score.

Sebastian Morinaga had TD runs of 10, 70 and 60 yards.

Landon Hansen caught a 35-yard TD on a wheel route.

Danny Resendiz took a screen pass 60 yards for a score.

Caesar Lizaola completed 8-of-11 pass attempts for 220 yards and three TD’s.

Up next: The Huskies will battle Covina (0-0) next Friday at 7.

The Colts open their season tonight, as they host California High School from Whittier.

Quotable:

South Hills senior, Matt Moreno: “It was good being back on the football field. Our coaches put together a great game plan and we did a good job executing it. The ball was well distributed offensively and we had fun the entire game. We’ve worked hard all off season and we are ready to play. Defensively, we were flying to the ball. It was fun to watch. We were hyped and flying all over the field. Can’t wait till next week!”
