Baseball:

They say the true measure of one’s character is the way in which we deal with our failures.

On Friday, Ayala’s Jeremy Byers had a no-hitter into the seventh inning against Justin Santiago, and the Bulldogs led visiting Bonita 1-0.

The Bearcats took advantage of a couple defensive miscues and rallied for a 4-1 victory.

Less than 17 hours later, Ayala’s Matt Yarc threw a two-hit shutout at Bonita.

AHS defeated BHS, 8-0, and handed Bonita just its second loss of the season.

Yarc surrendered singles to Colton Perez and Bryan Bradshaw, but the rest of the Bearcats lineup went 0-for-16.

He walked four and struck out three.

Ayala got three runs in the top of the first off Garrett Patterson.

Patterson was saddled with the loss, allowing four runs on five hits over two innings.

AHS got three runs on three hits over three innings and two walks against Tristan Rambaud, and one run from Camden Farina over his two innings.

Aiden Erlandsen went 3-for-4 with a walk, two runs and an RBI.

Dylan Wood singled twice and had one RBI.

Marcus Galvan walked twice, was hit by pitch, singled, scored and drove in a run.

A Hernandez drew a pair of walks, scored and had an RBI.

Caleb Trugman walked, singled and drove in one.

Jake Lemoine walked, singled, had an RBI and scored.

Andrew Torres was hit by pitch twice and scored.

Ethan Nunez doubled for the game’s lone extra-base hit.

Freshman Dylan Wood went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Quotable:

Ayala coach Brad McGuire: “The biggest thing we’ve been struggling with is that we’re a young group. We’re paying attention to small details and trying to be a team that grinds out at-bats. Yesterday against Santiago, we knew that he’d be dominant, but he got us out quickly. I talked to the guys about getting to their bullpen and today we did that. We have a productivity chart and we had eight guys that had a six-pitch at-bat. Matt was outstanding. He’s been doing it all year. He’s new to pitching, but he’s athletic and a competitor. He takes the mind set of being an infielder on the mound and the guys like playing behind him.”

Ayala pitcher, Matt Yarc: “The loss (yesterday) affected us, and Jeremy pitched really well. But it fired us up and we took that with us today. The offense helped by getting three runs in the top of the first, and that gave me confidence and helped me relax. I threw a lot of first-strike fastballs and my slider was moving well. Yesterday was tough, but we wanted to get the last laugh.”
