Softball:

For the first time in the 2022 postseason, and in the second round of the Little League World Series, the La Verne softball program met its match.

And it came in the name of Kaylee Hodges.

Hodges went the distance for Chesterfield (Virginia) in Wednesday’s 6-1 victory over La Verne.

Hodges allowed an unearned runs on three hits.

She didn’t issue a walk and struck out 11 LVLL batters.

Zoe Colburn singled and scored.

Laila Washington and Sofia Ayaberrano had one single apiece to account for the rest of the La Verne offense.

Katie Coldiron got the loss after allowing six runs (four earned) on six hits.

Coldiron went all six innings, walked four and struck out 11 Virginia batters.

Aaliyah Myers went 3-for-4, with a double, two runs and an RBI.

Gigi Caranante singled, doubled, scored and drove in a run.

Hodges helped her own cause with a single and two RBIs.

Kammie Walter walked and scored twice.

La Verne was 9-0 in the playoffs as they headed into Wednesday’s showdown with Virginia.

And its pitching staff had allowed just four total runs.

But from all reports, Chesterfield is one of the tournament’s favorites to win it all, and they obviously have a dominant pitcher in Kaylee Hodges.

Virginia also had the luxury of having a first-round bye on Tuesday.

Up next: La Verne will face Issaquah of Washington on Thursday in a win-or-go-home scenario.

The first pitch is set for 10 am Pacific time.

Washington fell, 13-4, on Tuesday, in their opener against Midway (Texas).

Issaquah had Wednesday off, while LVLL will be playing for the third consecutive day.

The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
