Baseball:
What a wild ride 2022 has been for the Bonita baseball program.
Six weeks ago, they lost consecutive games to last-place Colony and fourth-place Alta Loma.
The Bearcats were ridiculed on social media for launching a protest against Colony, because the Titans were taking a full batting practice session as Bonita showed up for their game on March 15th.
Oh, and by the way, they lost the protest.
To add insult to injury (pun intended), the Bearcats knew they were going to be forced to finish the final two months of the season without the services of their ace, Luke Mistone.
It sounded like a recipe for disaster.
But Bonita coach Ryan Marcos, his staff, and their players regrouped, dusted themselves off and won the final 10 games to claim a Palomares League championship, and that included three-game sweeps of second-and-third-place Ayala and Glendora, respectively.
The Bearcats closed out the 2022 season on Thursday with a 7-0 victory at Alta Loma.
Justin Santiago threw a three-hit shutout.
Santiago walked three and struck out 12 Alta Loma batters.
Of his 108 pitches, 70 were strikes.
Tucker Kraushaar, Eric Boen and Seth Reker had one single apiece to account for the Braves offense.
Alta Loma’s Dominic Gravina went three innings and allowed five runs on seven hits.
Gravina walked four and didn’t register a strikeout.
JT Fenton singled, doubled, scored and drove in a pair of runs.
Luke Mistone had three singles, scored and drove in one run.
Bryan Bradshaw and Garrett Patterson had RBI singles.
Adrian Lopez walked, singled twice and scored.
Diego Vazquez went 2-for-4, with a run and RBI.
Jared Brunk walked twice, singled twice and scored.
Daniel Munoz had an RBI and run scored in Thursday’s win.
Tyler Holley walked and scored.
Up next: BHS, AHS and GHS will find out their first-round opponent on Monday.
