Tyler Holley’s Two-Run, Walk-Off HR Leads Bonita to 5-3 Victory Over Colony; Justin Santiago Went Distance & Struck Out 11

Baseball:

What makes baseball different and some would argue better than the two other ‘major’ sports (football & basketball), is that anybody can beat anyone, regardless of an apparent talent or statistical mismatch.

And such is the case for Colony High School.

The Titans are 1-11 in Palomares League play, and yet their lone win came back on March 15th over first-place Bonita.

Fast forward five weeks, and Colony jumped on visiting Bonita for three runs in the top of the first inning.

The Bearcats entered Tuesday’s contest with a one-game lead over second place Ayala, and a two-game advantage over Glendora.

Instead of panicking, Bonita got even in the bottom of the second with three runs of their own, and went on to claim a 5-3 victory after Tyler Holley hit a two-run shot in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Riley Litwin went six innings for Colony and allowed three runs on six hits and two walks.

Alejandro Gomez was saddled with the loss after giving up Holley’s game-winning two-run HR.

Holley also doubled and drove in four of Bonita’s five runs.

Garrett Patterson walked, singled twice and scored a pair of runs.

Patterson opened the bottom of the seventh with a single and came around on Holley’s blast.

Adrian Lopez singled and scored for the Bearcats.

Diego Vazquez scored and had an RBI.

Bryan Bradshaw, Luke Mistone and Daniel Munoz had one single apiece in Tuesday’s win.

That brings us to Justin Santiago, who, to this writer, is one of the SGV area’s most underrated pitchers.

After allowing three first inning runs, which only one was earned, Santiago shut the door the rest of the way.

He didn’t issue a walk and struck out 11 Colony batters.

It only took Santiago 79 pitches to finish what he started.

Domenic Gonzalez doubled and drove in a pair of runs.

Jacob Pulido and Connor Rangel singled and scored one run apiece.

Alejandro Gomez singled and doubled, and Gavin Smith scored and had an RBI in the loss.
