Baseball:

The stingiest pitching staff in the Baseline Lague was at it again on Monday.

In their first seven games, Damien has allowed a league-low 17 runs.

And after a 1-2 start in league play, the Spartans are now in second place (4-3), and just one-game back of both RCHS and Etiwanda.

This time, it was Ryan Mullan who kept an opposing lineup silent, as the Spartans defeated their visitors from Los Osos, 3-1.

Mullan went the distance, allowing one run on three hits.

He didn’t issue a walk and struck out 10 Grizzlies’ batters.

Of his 83 pitches, Mullan threw an insane 60 for strikes.

The lone Los Osos run came on a double play turned by the Spartans in the top of the seventh inning.

Tyler Mohler, Daniel Moreno and Ryan Melton had one single apiece to account for the LOHS offense.

Cole Monsen got the loss after allowing three runs on five hits over his six-inning performance.

Monsen walked two and struck out a pair of Damien batters.

Christian Grino walked, doubled, scored and had an RBI.

Tyler Tancredi singled twice and drove in a pair of runs.

Nikko Paoletto walked, singled and scored two times.

Quotable:

Damien pitcher, Ryan Mullan: “Last year, we were more of an offensive team. But this year, our experience on the mound is starting to show and our pitching staff is very competitive. I am happy with the team chemistry, and after our younger players got some experience, they’re playing much better as well. I felt good out there today and I am just happy to do whatever I can to help this team win as many games as we can.”
