Baseball:

Let’s get the negative stuff out of the way.

JSerra defeated Ayala, 5-1, in the CIF State Division 1 title game.

Eric Silva went the distance on Saturday afternoon, allowing an unearned run on one hit.

Silva walked two and struck out 11.

It took the Lions senior 103 pitches to close out the state championship.

Ryan Moreno had the Bulldogs lone hit.

Ty Borgogno walked and scored on a sixth-inning sac fly off the bat of Mateo Matthews.

Thomas Cerecedes lost for the first time in 2021.

Cerecedes, the Palomares League MVP, surrendered four runs on five hits over his three innings on Saturday.

He walked one and fanned three JSerra batters.

Luke Jewett walked and hit a solo home run.

Cody Schrier walked twice, singled and scored a pair of runs.

Gage Jump singled, doubled and scored.

Gabe D’Arcy walked, singled twice, scored and had three RBIs.

As disappointing as it ended, the 2021 season was a huge success for the Bulldogs, which included winning 87-percent of their games.

They went 14-1 en route to a Palomares League title.

The 26 wins is the most the program has tallied in at least 15 years.

MaxPreps only dates back to 2005, so an exact year is difficult to peg, and could go back quite a ways.

Ayala was ranked No. 1 in the CIF-SS Division 1 poll for almost the entire season.

They made trips to the CIF-SS Division 1 semifinals and the CIF State Division 1 title game.

Among all the other accomplishments, Cole Koniarsky set a new school record with 139 career hits.

Congrats to Ayala coach Chris Vogt, his staff and the players that made 2021 a banner season for the Bulldogs.

Quotable:

Ayala coach, Chris Vogt: “I’m grateful for the kids. They were great all year. They stayed positive early and worked their butts off when we got the green light. The kids were relentless in their preparation. This group was the definition of a team. They cared about each other so much.”
