Baseball:

Don’t look now, but that tough schedule Charter Oak played in the regular season helped prepare the Chargers for the playoffs.

And that’s exactly how COHS coach Elias Chavez planned it.

After a first-round victory over the Hacienda League champions from Los Altos, Charter Oak knocked off 21-4 Woodbridge by a score of 3-2 on Tuesday afternoon.

Woodbridge walked Evan Avitia with the bases loaded to clinch the victory.

Zack Bauer went the first five innings and allowed two runs on seven hits.

Bauer walked one and struck out five Woodbridge batters.

Chris Ceballos got the win, because the Chargers scored the game winner after he pitched a scoreless top of the seventh inning.

Jack Bunnell went 2-for-3 and scored for Woodbridge.

Dylan Blakey singled twice and drove in a run in the loss.

Lachsan Ramanathan was stuck with the loss, allowing the game-winning run.

Ramanathan went 2 1/3 innings, giving up two hits, walking four and striking out three COHS batters.

Chris Ceballos walked twice, singled and scored two runs.

Gabriel Rico walked and singled twice.

Evan Avitia finished 1-for-3, with a walk, single and two RBI’s, including the game winner.

Anthony Blanquet had an RBI base hit in the win.

Up next: Charter Oak will face Royal on Friday.

The Highlanders (20-5) defeated Montebello, 11-3, on Tuesday.

Quotable:

Charter Oak coach, Elias Chavez: “I’m just really proud of the kids, because they bought into the process and we’re now headed to the quarterfinal round of the Division 4 playoffs. Zack had a great outing today. He had a couple rough starts of late, but he really bounced back and pitched really well today. We’re getting contributions from everyone and that’s how you win playoff baseball games.”
