Baseball:

Alec Beck looked like a savvy veteran on the mound Thursday afternoon.

The Damien senior went 6 1/3 scoreless innings to lead the Spartans to a 2-0 victory over South Hills in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs.

Beck’s defense helped him out by turning three double plays.

Beck scattered four hits, walked four and struck out five South Hills batters.

Kaden Moeller got the final two outs to earn the save.

Jeremiah Sibrian and Marcos Rosales both walked and had one single apiece for the Huskies.

Gilbert Morales and Matthew Yanez had the other two SHHS hits on Thursday.

South Hills sophomore Sterling Patick pitched well, but was stuck with the loss.

Patick went 4 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on three hits.

He walked three and had one strikeout.

Matthew Lorenzano contributed 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief, allowing one hit and striking out one.

Tyler Daley singled home JD Dunn in the bottom of the second inning to give Damien a 1-0 lead.

Alec Beck would double and score to help his own cause.

Sebastian Arguelles drove in a fifth-inning run to extend the lead to 2-0, and Beck/Moeller would do the rest.
