Baseball:

Whew!

St. Francis needed a win in the worst way.

After eight consecutive losses and 27 days since their last victory, the Golden Knights not only snapped their losing streak, they did so in dramatic fashion.

Trailing 1-0 in the top of the seventh inning at Chaminade, they scored a pair of runs off Aric Berg to edge the Eagles, 2-1, in Monday’s Mission League thriller.

Lucas Dixon had an RBI base hit to tie the game and Quinn Deitch singled in what turned out to be the game winner.

Diego Robles singled, doubled and scored in the win.

Tommy Italia was hit-by-pitch and scored for the Golden Knights.

Lucas Dixon doubled for SFHS.

Berg went seven innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits.

He walked one and struck out eight Golden Knights’ batters.

Kai Purdy-Burton was outstanding on the mound for St. Francis.

He went the distance, allowing just an unearned run on four hits, walked one and fanned 11 Eagles’ batters.

Oskar Stark had three of Chaminade’s four hits, and that included an RBI double.

Up next: St. Francis will host Chaminade today (Tuesday) at the Glendale Sports Complex in game two of their three-game series.
