Final Week of Regular Season: Damien, Maranatha & Monrovia on Doorstep of Claiming League Titles

May 24 2021 05:37:00

Baseball:

This is it.

The final week of the regular season.

Thus far, Ayala, Marshall Fundamental and San Dimas have officially wrapped up Palomares, Mission Valley and Valle Vista league titles, respectively.

The drama this week has Damien, Flintridge Prep, Maranatha and Monrovia on the verge of Baseline, Prep, Olympic and Rio Hondo league title opportunities.

Baseline League:

Damien enters its final three games with a two-game lead over second-place Chino Hills and a three-game advantage over both Los Osos and Rancho Cucamonga.

The Spartans have already swept Los Osos and Etiwanda, and won 2-of-3 with Upland and Chino Hills.

A lot is still possible from 2-4, as Damien and Rancho Cucamonga and Los Osos-Chino Hills meet up three times this week.

Baseline League Schedule:
Monday: RCHS at Damien, CHHS at LOHS, Etiwanda at Upland
Tuesday: LOHS at CHHS
Wednesday: Damien at RCHS, Upland at Etiwanda
Friday: RCHS at Damien, CHHS at LOHS, Etiwanda at Upland

Baseline League Standings:
Damien (16-6 overall, 10-2 in league)
Chino Hills (16-7, 8-4)
RCHS (18-8, 7-5)
Los Osos (13-9, 7-5)
Etiwanda (9-14, 3-9)
Upland (9-15, 1-11)

Olympic League:

It’s pretty simple for Maranatha.

Sweep last-place Heritage Christian on Tuesday and Thursday, and the Minutemen will remain league champions.

MHS (9-1 in league) has outscored its opponents, 60-19, while Heritage Christian has been outscored, 63-32.

MHS holds a one-game lead over second-place Cerritos Valley Christian, but if the Minutemen and Defenders ended the week in a tie, Maranatha would get the No. 1 seed, because of a two-games to one season (series) victory,

Matt Shupper’s program would never take an opponent lightly, and despite being in the Olympic League cellar, Heritage Christian hung with CVC three days ago before falling, 2-1.

Olympic League Schedule:
Tuesday: Heritage Christian vs Maranatha at 5 at Brookside Park
Tuesday: Whittier Christian at Valley Christian at 4
Thursday: Maranatha at Heritage Christian
Thursday: Valley Christian at Whittier Christian at 3:30

Olympic League Standings:
Maranatha (17-3, 9-1)
Valley Christian (16-5, 8-2)
Whittier Christian (8-14, 3-6)
Village Christian (5-14, 3-8)
Heritage Christian (3-13, 2-8)

Pacific League:

With three games to play for Arcadia, the Apaches hold a two-game lead over second-place Crescenta Valley.

The Apaches had their 10-game win streak snapped on Saturday morning at San Dimas.

But Arcadia has already put the SDHS loss in their rear-view mirror and they’re looking to improve to 12-0 in Pacific League games.

AHS will host CV on Tuesday night at 7 in the first of two games this week with the Falcons.

In mid-April, an Apaches’ player tested positive for COVID-19 and the program had to quarantine for two weeks.

It also forced Arcadia to reschedule a few games.

Arcadia and Glendale met for the first time back on May 3rd, and the Apaches defeated the visiting Nitros, 17-0, in five innings.

They’ll finish their two-game series on Wednesday at Glendale High School.

And then AHS and CV will close out the regular season with a 7 p.m. contest on Friday at Stengel Field.

Pacific League Schedule:
Tuesday: CV at Arcadia at 7
Wednesday: Arcadia at Glendale at 3:30.
Friday: Arcadia at Crescenta Valley at 7

Pacific League Standings:
Arcadia (18-4, 11-0)
CV (17-7, 10-2)
Burbank (11-4, 9-3)
Burroughs (11-10, 7-5)
Glendale (7-9, 4-7)
Pasadena (6-15, 3-9)
Muir (3-10, 3-9)
Hoover (4-14, 0-12)

Palomares League:

Ayala and Bonita have secured first and second place, respectively.

With a sweep of the Bearcats, the Bulldogs would enter the CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs as the No. 1 ranked team in D-1, and they’d begin the postseason on an 18-game win streak.

Bonita has won seven straight and what a shot in the arm it would be if they could split or sweep their series with Ayala.

Claremont has a lock on the No. 3 seed out of the Palomares League.

Alta Loma needs one of two against Glendora to finish in fourth place.

Palomares League Schedule:
Tuesday: Claremont at Colony
Wednesday: Colony at Claremont, Glendora at Alta Loma, Ayala at Bonita
Friday: Alta Loma at Glendora, Bonita at Ayala

Palomares League:
Ayala (20-1, 13-0)
Bonita (13-4, 10-3)
Claremont (14-12, 7-6)
Alta Loma (5-13, 5-8)
Glendora (12-15, 4-9)
Colony (1-19, 0-13)

Prep League:

There is a tad of drama still remaining in the final week of the Prep League.

Flintridge Prep has a one-game lead over second-place Poly with one game to go.

Prep will travel to Rio Hondo Prep on Friday, and a victory would secure an outright league championship.

But if the Kares are able to defeat the Wolves and Poly beats RHP on Tuesday at RHP, the two rivals would have to share the title.

Poly won the season series over Flintridge Prep, two games to one, so a co-league title would see the Panthers getting the league’s No. 1 seed.

Prep League Schedule:
Tuesday: Poly at Rio Hondo Prep
Friday: Flintridge Prep at Rio Hondo Prep

Prep League:
Flintridge Prep (11-2, 9-2)
Poly (11-4, 8-3)
RHP: (7-8, 5-5)
Chadwick (6-8, 4-8)
Providence (4-15, 2-10)

Rio Hondo League:

Monrovia needs just one victory in their two-game series with Temple City to claim the outright league championship.

The Wildcats saw La Canada snap their 13-game win streak in Friday’s 6-5 setback in 14 innings.

But Monrovia won the season series, two games to one over the Spartans.

So, even if Temple City swept the Wildcats and La Canada won both of their games with South Pasadena, Monrovia would get the league’s top seed.

Rio Hondo League Schedule:
Tuesday: Temple City at Monrovia, South Pasadena at La Canada
Friday: Monrovia at Temple City, La Canada at South Pasadena

Rio Hondo League Standings:
Monrovia (17-3, 9-1)
La Canada (12-4, 7-3)
South Pasadena (9-9, 5-5)
Temple City (5-7, 5-5)
San Marino (1-15, 0-12)

Valle Vista League:

With San Dimas securing its stranglehold of the VVL penthouse, there isn’t a lot of drama.

But second place is still up for grabs.

Charter Oak and Northview split their two-game series last week and head into the final week tied for second place.

The Chargers meet up twice with last-place and winless Diamond Ranch, and the Vikings will match up with fourth-place Covina in a two-game set.

Valle Vista League Schedule:
Monday: Diamond Ranch at Charter Oak
Wednesday: West Covina at San Dimas, Diamond Ranch at Charter Oak, Northview at Covina
Friday: San Dimas at West Covina, Covina at Northview

Valle Vista League Standings:
San Dimas (16-4, 8-0)
Northview (15-8, 5-3)
Charter Oak (14-11, 5-3)
Covina (7-5, 4-4)
West Covina (7-14, 2-6)
Diamond Ranch (0-11, 0-8)
