Baseball:
For most of Friday night’s finale of a three-game series, Loyola’s Sammy Morales and St. Francis’ Kai Purdy-Burton were locked in a pitchers duel.
The Cubs and Golden Knights were tied at 1-1 until Loyola struck for six runs in the top of the sixth inning and got two more in the seventh to claim a 9-1 victory at the Glendale Sports Complex.
Burton went the first five innings and allowed just one run on three hits.
He walked four and struck out nine, but wasn’t in on the decision.
Alex Finch and Aaron Petersen were charged with three runs apiece and Loyola got two more off of Bailey Ewan.
Jackson Shea walked, singled twice, scored, stole two bases and had an RBI from the Cubs leadoff spot.
David Case walked and had an RBI base hit.
Case also made a putout from right field to third base to end the fourth inning, and one at home to end the fifth.
Nick Valdez walked twice and scored both times, and Lane Johnson walked and scored a run.
Daniel Marquez walked, had an inside-the-park home run, scored twice and drove in a pair of runs.
Edward Holly singled and scored two runs, and Nico Morales went 2-for-4, with two RBIs and a run.
Sammy Morales was credited with the win after five innings of work.
He allowed one run on four hits, walked one and struck out four.
Nick Goethals went two scoreless inning to close out the win, and struck out three Golden Knights’ batters.
Diego Robles singled and scored.
Luke Crawshaw, Lucas Dixon and Luke Fogarty each singled for St. Francis.
St. Francis took game one of the three-game series, 7-2, on Tuesday.
But Loyola was able to win the series with victories on Wednesday (4-3) and Friday (9-1).
Up next: St. Francis opens a three-game series with Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks starting Tuesday at the Glendale Sports Complex.
Loyola will host Crespi in the first of three, which begins on Tuesday.
