Baseball:

Monrovia took a massive step forward towards a potential Rio Hondo League championship on Monday afternoon.

The Wildcats edged second place and visiting San Marino, 1-0, in a pitchers’ duel.

MHS scored once in the bottom of the sixth and that’s all the offense either side could muster.

James Quesenbery went six scoreless innings to earn the win.

Quesenbery allowed two hits, walked four and struck out three SMHS batters.

Sutton Powers retired the side in the seventh, including a pair of strikeouts to earn the save.

Tomas Bilvado and Jamie Bercaw had one single apiece for the Titans.

JJ Wilson pitched better than well enough to win, but he was on the wrong end of a 1-0 decision.

Wilson went all six for San Marino, and he was charged with one run on seven hits.

Wilson didn’t issue a walk, and he struck out 10 Monrovia batters.

Of his 106 pitches, 72 were strikes.

Wilson got eight of the nine Wildcats’ batters on strikes at least once.

Sully Zinn singled in the bottom of the sixth inning, and he scored on Isaias Hernandez’s RBI base hit.

Josh Griffiths went 2-for-3.

Braydon Blackmore, Tristan Oandasan and Troy Grise had one hit apiece for MHS.

Up next: The Titans host the Wildcats on Thursday at 3:30.
