Monrovia got two runs in the bottom of the first inning and Coleman Mitchell made that stand up.

The Wildcats edged the Spartans, 2-1, in the Rio Hondo League opener for both programs.

Mitchell allowed just one run on four hits.

He walked one and struck out 14 La Canada batters.

Timmy Park singled and hit a solo shot in the second inning for the Spartans.

Nathan Mertens got the loss.

Mertens went all six innings, allowing two runs on four hits.

He walked one and struck out seven MHS batters.

Mitchell helped his own cause with a double and run scored.

Chantz Powers singled, doubled, scored and stole a base.

Matthew Delgado had an RBI single in the win.
