Baseball:

Baseball can be both beautiful and heartbreaking.

On Thursday, St. Francis saw just how hard a gut punch the game can deliver.

Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Golden Knights had the bases loaded with one out.

Damien’s Kaden Moeller was on the mound.

And in consecutive at-bats, and with a full-count both times, Moeller struck out a St. Francis batter for the second out, and got a ground out to clinch a 3-2 victory for the Spartans.

Damien improved to 2-1, while St. Francis remains winless (0-6).

Alec Beck went the first three innings without allowing a run.

St. Francis got a pair of runs off of Ryan Mullan and then Seth Sumner and Kaden Moeller were able to preserve the one-run lead.

Luke Crawshaw walked twice, doubled and scored.

Diego Robles had an RBI base hit and Tommy Italia scored once for the Golden Knights.

Ethan Sanders pitched well, and still got the loss.

Sanders allowed just two earned runs over his five innings of work.

He walked one and struck out four Damien batters.

Ryan Durfee went two scoreless innings of relief for the Golden Knights.

Christian Grino singled, doubled and scored twice.

Tyler Daley singled and scored and Andrew Ingraham had an RBI base hit in the win.
