Football:

For the second time in three years, Bonita finished the regular season 10-0.

The Bearcats were able to secure a 28-14 victory over their visitors from Glendora and reclaimed the keys to the Sierra League penthouse from Charter Oak.

BHS also pulled off one of the all-time class moves in recent memory.

Two days prior, 15-year-old Glendora High School student Ella Laing passed away after a valiant battle with cancer.

Ella, just six weeks ago, served as the honorary captain of her big sister’s (Avery) flag football team in a win over Claremont.

Bonita captain Joseph Lara went into his principal’s (Kenny Ritchie) office and they spoke about honoring Ella and her family.

So, before Thursday’s game, the players, coaches and administrators from both sides got together at midfield and said a prayer for Ella and her family.

BHS also scrapped the original plan of having a USA theme and decided to do an ‘orange out’ to stand in unison with the GHS players and fans in their moment of grief.

After the prayer and hugs all around, Mr. and Mrs. Laing and GHS senior Avery Laing were there for the coin flip and there were many who had to fight back tears for this beautiful young family.

The game seemed almost anticlimactic, but the show had to go on.

Bonita scored 28 of the first 35 points and the contest was never in doubt.

Less than six minutes in, Sebastian Vasquez sprinted 46 yards into the west end zone for a 7-0 lead.

One minute and 11 seconds later, and the game was tied at 7-7, when Sebastian Lawrence tossed a 51-yard TD pass to Tyson Rush.

BHS took a 21-7 lead into the break.

Isaiah Guerrero hooked up with Matt Milazzo on a 64-yard TD pass in the first quarter.

And Dane Gosserand reeled in a 34-yard scoring strike from Guerrero on a fourth-and-13 play with 2:21 to play in the half.

For all intents and purposes, Joseph Lara put the game on ice with his 5-yard TD run with just north of two minutes to play in the third quarter to give the Bearcats a 28-7 lead.

Jude Munoz came on in the fourth quarter and he tossed a 9-yard TD pass to Carson Kassotis.

Vasquez and Lara combined to gain 246 yards rushing with one TD apiece on 27 carries.

Vasquez gained 156 yards on 12 carries and Lara carried the ball 15 times for 90 yards.

Guerrero was 7-of-16 for 140 yards, the two TDs and he was picked by Glendora’s Quinn Thompson.

Ryder Grosenbach had an interception for the Bonita defense and KT Stephens recovered a pair of fumbles.

For the Tartans, Lawrence was 10-of-18 for 190 yards.

Lawrence tossed one TD and was picked.

Muñoz completed 2 of his 3 attempts for 31 yards and the TD.

Rush had four receptions for 110 yards and the first-quarter score.

Kassotis finished with four catches for 46 yards and a TD.

Nazir McGlothen gained eight yards on seven carries.

Noah Brus had three carries for 22 yards.

Up next: GHS and BHS will get their playoff opponent on Sunday morning at 10.
