Football:
After improving his personal record to 8-0 in the annual Smudge Pot rivalry game, the first thing four-time CIF-SS championship coach Steve Bogan said to this reporter was praising the San Dimas administration for the hiring of 25-year-old Dylan O’Leary to lead the Saints football program.
Yes, the Bearcats never trailed in a 28-16 victory at Mt. SAC.
But the boys in blue fought their asses off and they were just inches away from making it a one-score game with just over five minutes to play.
Credit goes to that BHS defense for bending but never breaking.
And it was that same defense that provided the first score.
Matt Milazzo picked off a pass and returned it 83 yards for a score.
Joseph Lara then had TD runs of 3 and 90 yards before taking the second half off in a cautious move to protect some knee swelling.
BHS failed on their first extra-point so after a third score in the first half, they successfully went for the 2-point conversion and enjoyed a 21-0 lead.
Matthew Witerby’s right foot got SDHS on the board with a 32-yard field goal.
Shortly thereafter, Kris Saras found Michael Baeza for an 8-yard TD in the north end zone, however, the 2-point attempt failed.
In the fourth quarter, Saras and Baeza hooked up on a 14-yard TD connection in the south end zone.
As mentioned, the Saints were on the doorstep of a potential five-point game, but the Bonita defense ended all thoughts of a dramatic San Dimas comeback.
BHS’ lone score in the second half came on a trick play where Milazzo tossed a 44-yard TD pass to Omari Sullivan.
On just three carries, Lara gained 100 yards and the two TDs.
San Dimas’ Saris was 16-for-31 for 261 yards.
He had the two TD passes to Baeza and picks to Bonita’s Matt Milazzo and Trey Harvey.
Baeza had five receptions for 83 yards and he doubled his season total to four TD catches.
Jacob Gallegos had a game-high 128 yards on seven catches.
Harvey also blocked an SDHS punt.
Levi Gregorich had two sacks and two forced fumbles for the Bearcats defense.
Up next: BHS and SDHS will both be in action next Friday.
The Bearcats host Schurr and the Saints travel to Western.
