Baseball:
One of the area’s great stories in 2026 is the return of Upland baseball.
Last year, the Highlanders went 5-22 overall and 1-15 in Baseline League games to finish in dead last.
Fast forward to 2026, and UHS has now won 13 games, they’re 5-5 in Baseline League play, and with five games remaining on their schedule, they trail second-place Damien by one game.
On Monday, Upland trailed 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth inning, until Andrew Weber’s two-run walk-off double secured a 4-3 victory over their visitors from Los Osos.
Jordan Mejico went 6 1/3 innings, and he was charged with two runs on seven hits.
Mejico issued two walks and registered nine strikeouts.
Wyatt Mohler was saddled with the loss after surrendering a pair of runs on four hits and a walk over one inning of work.
Ryan May walked and his RBI triple in the bottom of the seventh inning tied the game at 2-2.
Darren Maung singled three times and scored.
Angelo Mantilla singled twice and scored.
Elliot Cresap drew a pair of walks and his RBI single in the bottom of the fourth tied the game at 1-1.
Jaydin Castro singled and scored.
Jaedan Quemada and Tommy Lopez singled for UHS.
Grant Garbick pinch-ran in the eighth and scored on the Weber double.
Ezekiel Cortez went four innings for Upland, and he surrendered two runs on four hits.
Cortez walked one and fanned four LOHS batters.
Issac Carlos got the win after four innings, and allowing one run on four hits.
Carlos didn’t issue a walk and registered four strikeouts.
Wyatt Mohler continues adding to his career hits record at LOHS.
Mohler went 3-for-4 with two runs.
Mohler had an RBI double in the top of the first inning, and his solo home run in the eighth gave the Grizzlies a 3-2 lead.
Taylor Chairez singled in a run in the fourth and doubled.
Brady Gomez singled and scored.
Presten Young and Moses Lanza had one single apiece.
Up next: UHS travels to LOHS on Wednesday at 3:30.
Quotable:
Upland coach, Dylan Smith: (How did UHS turn the program around after a 5-22 season in 2025?) “I think it’s just that first year was a transitional year with a lot of younger players. They’ve worked hard and having a new field opened up some doors that we couldn’t do at Memorial Field. (Rallying in the seventh and eighth) means the character of this team is that we’re not going to give up. As a group, we are resilient. We’re building a culture and trying to win every day. We haven’t been to the playoffs since 2014, so coming in, my big aspiration was to make the playoffs and it’s been a focal point.”
