Football:
St. Francis appears to have found its rhythm.
After beginning the 2024 season with six consecutive losses, the Golden Knights have won a pair of Angelus League contests.
Last week, SFHS claimed a 37-13 victory at Alemany.
And on Friday night, St. Francis persevered in a 39-30 shootout over their visitors from Paraclete.
For the second consecutive week, Isaac Fajardo (3) and John Sanders (2) accounted for five Golden Knights’ touchdowns.
Fajardo might stand just 5-foot-7 and weigh 160 pounds, but this dude is a badass.
The Golden Knights’ senior played with a bum ankle, but he wasn’t going to let his boys down.
Fajardo rushed for 164 yards 22 carries.
That included TD runs of 10, 1 and 2 yards.
To their credit, Paraclete trailed 21-10 at one point and they got as close as 29-23 of SFHS.
However, after Savaughn Gentle caught a 26-yard TD pass from PHS quarterback Joseph Meza with 11:50 to play, Deveon Blaylock returned the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for a TD and a 36-23 advantage.
Leading 36-30, Shawn Sanders officially put the game on ice with his 24-yard field goal with 0:29 showing on the scoreboard at Jim Bonds Stadium.
The Golden Knights are now 2-1 in Angelus League games, and they trail league-leading Cathedral and St. Paul by one game.
SFHS travels to Los Angeles next week to battle the Phantoms, and they’ll finish off the regular season by hosting winless St. Pius.
John Sanders accounted for 167 yards of total offense.
Sanders went 6-of-10 for 81 yards.
Sanders and Cofre hooked up on a 19-yard scoring strike to get the Golden Knights on the board.
He also rushed for 86 yards in Friday’s win.
Eric Green had a solid game for the Spirits.
In fact, Green opened the Paraclete scoring with a 28-yard TD reception from Joseph Meza.
And he closed out the night offensively for PHS on a 1-yard TD run to pull to within 36-30 of the Golden Knights.
