Football:
San Dimas enters Friday night’s Smudge Pot showdown at Mt. SAC having lost seven consecutive games.
And it hasn’t been super competitive.
Since four-time CIF-SS championship coach Steve Bogan took over the reins at BHS in 2018, the Bearcats have outscored the Saints by a combined margin of 215-87.
Bonita even secured a 28-14 victory last season in spite of not having their quarterback (Travis Lippert) or two-way star (RB/LB) Joseph Lara, as both were injured in a week-zero loss at Muir.
Lippert graduated but Lara is back and better than ever.
On paper, Bonita would be considered the favorite, but San Dimas has a new coaching staff that has the Saints players and community fired up.
Under the previous regime, SDHS had a combined 13-game losing streak to crosstown and Valle Vista League rivals, Bonita and Northview, respectively.
NHS has left the VVL in 2026, and they’re no longer on San Dimas’ schedule.
However, the Saints will get a shot at breaking one of those streaks on Friday night.
The last time San Dimas knocked off Bonita (19-8 in 2017), 25-year-old head coach Dylan O’Leary was the SDHS quarterback and he threw a TD pass in the win.
O’Leary has an experienced and committed staff, including a pair of former head coaches, namely Covina’s Kevin Glaspy and Joe Brown.
Steve Bogan, who won four CIF-SS titles at South Hills and his staff will never get out-coached, so Friday’s showdown should be a good match of the football minds.
Both programs enter the contest at 3-0.
Bonita leads in almost every statistical category
The Bearcats have advantages in points scored (109-80), (least) points allowed (19-29), total offense (292-235), passing yards (156-101) and rushing yards (136-134) per game.
At the sport’s most important position, San Dimas sophomore Kris Saras has completed 24-of-44 for 304 yards.
He’s tossed a pair of TD passes and one interception.
His counterpart, Evan Robbins is an effective 26-of-33 for 298 yards.
Robbins has totaled four TD passes and one pick.
Bonita has a two-headed monster at running back, with Sebastian Vasquez (18-for-163 & one TD) and Joseph Lara (24-for-162 & four TDs) who have combined for 325 yards on 42 carries and five TDs.
Keep in mind, the BHS starters have been long gone at halftime in the last two blowouts (89-7) over Diamond Ranch and Western.
Jacob Gallegos (26-for-129 & two TDs) and Vincent Scates (21-for-102 & one TD) are a formidable duo for San Dimas.
Liam Loyola has also gained 77 yards on 11 carries and one TD.
SDHS wrestler Michael Baeza has more catches than anyone in this game.
Through week two, Baeza has nine receptions for 141 yards and two TDs.
Matt Milazzo leads BHS with seven catches for 108 yards and three scores.
Omari Sullivan (5-for-84 and one TD), Carter Mann (5-for-74 & one TD) and Issac Herrera (3-for-73) have also been favorite targets of Robbins.
Alex Salazar (3-for-76), Cash Jones (5-for-28) and Jacob Gallegos (4-for-39) have been key members of the San Dimas receiving corps.
Both the Saints and Bearcats have been dominant defensively.
BHS has surrendered just 13 points and SDHS enters week three having allowed 21 points, including eight that came on the last play of the game at Chaffey after the starters had long left the contest.
Adam Damato (21), Vincent Scathes (18) and Jacob Gallegos (15) have combined for 54 tackles for San Dimas.
Joseph Lara (14), Sebastian Vasquez (11), Matthew Mijares (11), Izik Ramirez (11) and Jaedyn Lamb (11) have led the BHS defense with 58 combined tackles.
Three Bearcats (Izik Rodriguez, Matthew Mijares & Luca Roselli) have one sack apiece, and Vincent Scathes has the lone sack for SDHS.
Bonita’s Ryder Grosenbach (2) is the only player on either team that has multiple interceptions, one of which went for a pick-six.
BHS (132) is ranked 146 spots higher in the most recent MaxPreps state ranking.
Lastly, San Dimas opponents (Glendora, Chaffey and Colony) are a combined 3-6, while Bonita has faced Muir, Diamond Ranch and Western, which are a combined 1-8.
