Football:
West Covina left Alta Loma with a 28-26 victory over the Lions in the Valle Vista League opener for both programs.
Trailing 21-14 in the third quarter, ALHS scored, but they missed the extra-point attempt.
After a fourth-quarter TD, Alta Loma was forced to go for 2, and they came up short.
The Bulldogs were able to outlast a pretty solid effort from ALHS quarterback, Maximus Fierro.
Fierro accounted for 246 yards of total offense and all four scores.
He rushed for three TDs and tossed a scoring strike to Bryant Avila.
Fierro’s counterpart, West Covina’s Elias Irvin, accounted for four TDs of his own.
Irvin completed 10-of-18 for 175 yards.
He tossed three TD passes and one pick.
Vance Davis had a game-high 106 rushing yards on nine carries.
Irvin gained 48 yards on six carries.
Isaac Villescas had 15 carries for 76 yards.
West Covina had a 238-111 advantage on the ground, and they were able to effectively keep Fierro on the ALHS sidelines late by bleeding the clock dry.
Villescas also caught four passes for 84 yards and one TD.
Moses Gogue had three receptions for 76 yards and two TDs.
Fierro had 64 rushing yards on 13 carries and as mentioned, three TD runs.
He completed 11-of-19 for 182 yards.
Izaih Brown gained 33 yards on eight carries.
Avila had a big game with 131 receiving yards on seven catches in the loss.
Semaj Stewart caught a pair of passes for 42 yards, and he had a long kickoff return.
Owen Fiorenza led Alta Loma with 12 tackles, while Mason Kovar had 10 tackles and an interception.
Colin Boen tallied nine tackles and Ryder Dunlap had seven.
Devon White picked Irvin and totaled three tackles.
