Football:

Statistically, Santa Fe had every right to claim Friday’s nonleague showdown with Covina.

They outrushed the Colts 216-49, had a 25-18 advantage in first downs, and the Chiefs were penalized six times for 49 yards, as compared to CHS being flagged 14 times for 146 yards.

On top of that, Santa Fe seemed to have stopped Covina on a fourth-down play with just over a minute to play.

However, a pass interference call and some heroics by Roy Vazquez and Matt Olivas allowed Covina to edge the Chiefs, 28-27 at Covina District Field.

After the PI call, Vazquez tossed a 48-yard pass to Olivas, who tripped at approximately the 5-yard line.

Olivas falling to the turf actually helped the Colts in the long run by eating up some valuable seconds off the clock.

Two plays later, Vazquez took the ball from the shotgun and easily scored from one yard out.

Aidan Spencer’s extra point was the official difference in the win.

The Chiefs didn’t manage the clock very well at the end.

When Covina kicked off after the Vazquez TD run, there were 23 seconds remaining on the scoreboard.

The prudent route, it seemed, would be to get down as quickly as possible to stop the clock, and allow the offense to have a little time to mount a drive into field goal range.

SFHS had a couple of timeouts to use as well.

The Chiefs player, though, went north and south and it cost them 13 valuable seconds.

With just a few ticks remaining, Santa Fe decided to send their kicker out to attempt a 57-yard field goal instead of tossing a pass into the end zone and hoping for the best.

Unfortunately for SFHS, the kick didn’t get within 20 yards of the goal post.

Vazquez had a big night for Covina.

He completed 27-of-38 for 302 yards.

That included three TD passes and no picks.

Vazquez also rushed for 24 yards on six carries, including the late score.

Gatsbee Gumban led CHS with 25 yards on seven carries.

Olivas had a monster game with 13 catches for 168 yards.

Olivas caught TD passes of 6, 55 and 5 yards.

Kevin Perez had six receptions for 69 yards.

Matthew Chavez totaled five catches for 46 yards and Gumban caught three passes for 19 yards.

Cole Castaneda completed 12-of-20 for 125 yards, one TD and an interception.

Luke Hitch carried the ball 22 times for 132 yards.

Hit had TD runs of 5, 6 and 11 yards.

Unfortunately for the Chiefs, they missed the extra-point on their final TD of the game, and it cost them in the end.

Devin Clark gained 84 yards on 10 carries in the loss.

Dominic Borunda had the pick for CHS.

Up next: The Colts will host Chino next Friday in the Hacienda League opener for both programs.

The Cowboys (1-4) didn’t play in week five and they’ve been outscored by a combined margin of 160-102.
