The top two teams in the Baseline League met up Monday afternoon at RCHS in the first of a three-game series.
Los Osos swept Chino Hills last week, and Rancho Cucamonga got all three against Upland.
In a battle of aces, Brock Foulds and the Cougars outlasted Reagan Samples and the Grizzlies, 3-2.
Foulds went the distance, and he surrendered two runs on five hits.
Foulds didn’t issue a walk and registered five strikeouts.
He needed 92 pitches to finish what he started, and 69 of the 92 were strikes.
Justin Yeutter and Reagan Samples had two-out RBI singles in the top of the fourth inning to pull to within 3-2 of the Cougars.
Samples finished 2-for-3, including a one-out base hit in the top of the seventh.
However, Foulds was able to retire the final two batters on ground balls.
Yeutter scored one run to go along with his single.
Wyatt Mohler singled and scored in the fourth.
Roberto Topete doubled.
After the first two batters in the first inning, Samples was in control.
Foulds led off with a double, and Jose Gomez hit a two-run HR.
Foulds went 2-for-3 with a walk, single, double and one run.
Gomez had an RBI ground out in the second to give RCHS a 3-0 lead.
Samples went five innings, and he was charged with three runs on six hits.
He walked five and struck out four Cougars’ batters.
Samples expended 95 pitches, and 51 were strikes.
Zenen Pena went the seventh and got two of his three outs via strikeout.
Aiden Bravo walked, singled and scored.
Rowan Suchanek went 2-for-2 and drew a walk.
Grant Thomas walked and doubled.
