College Baseball:
The final of Tuesday’s IEAC opener looked exactly what it should when a first and last-place program match up.
Chaffey hammered the IEAC cellar dwellers from Barstow, 16-3, and they had a 17-7 edge in base hits.
The only thing Andrew Smith couldn’t have been too happy with was his Panthers tying the Vikings with four errors apiece.
Chaffey has won four consecutive games and six of their last seven.
Ian Hoffstetter got the win after going six innings and allowing an unearned run on five hits.
Hoffstetter walked one and fanned seven.
Nick Sanchez went two innings and surrendered two runs (one earned) on two hits.
Sanchez didn’t issue a walk and registered a pair of strikeouts.
Norberto Toscano provided a perfect ninth inning including a pair of strikeouts.
Andres Gonzalez went 2-for-4 with a triple, solo HR and two runs.
David Aceron went 2-for-4.
Manuel Barraza singled and scored.
Cameron Buck and Easton Mitchell singled once each for Barstow.
Michael Carger got lit up like a Roman candle.
Carger was charged with seven runs on eight hits and three walks over just two innings.
He also surrendered a pair of home runs.
Chaffey got to Cameron Buck for eight runs (five earned) on nine hits over five innings.
Buck walked one and fanned a pair of Panthers’ batters.
Cameron Casado was just a single short of hitting for the cycle.
Casado went 3-for-5 with a walk, double, triple, homered and four RBIs.
Ryder Young walked, scored a pair of runs, and his three-run HR in the bottom of the first inning gave Chaffey a 3-0 lead.
Jaden St. Cyr went 3-for-6 with two runs.
Derek Almeda walked, doubled, tripled, scored and drove in a pair of runs.
AJ Hurtado walked, singled, scored and had one RBI.
Kaden Durazo went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and a pair of RBIs.
Dominick Torrez and Joe Gilkeson walked, singled and scored one run each.
Ryan Melton went 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
Jayden Sanchez singled, drove in a run and scored.
Austin Easter singled, and Lance Armijo scored.
Up next: The Panthers host the Vikings on Thursday at 2:30.
