Wrestling:
Of the 28 wrestlers from 210 Prep Sports programs, six placed at last weekend’s CIF State Championships in Bakersfield.
However, 18 competitors headed back to the San Gabriel Valley with a respectable .500 or better record inside the Mechanics Bank Arena.
Additionally, there were three impressive young women who competed on their sport’s brightest stage.
Glendora’s Samantha Sachs (130), Northview’s Delarie Juarez (145) and San Dimas’ Charlene Smith (235) fought for a state championship in front of approximately 7,000 fans on Saturday evening.
Sachs, who got pinned in last year’s state title bout, just steamrolled her competition during an unbeaten senior campaign.
She pinned her first three opponents in 1:02, 1:31 and 1:13.
Sachs earned a tech fall (18-3) in her semifinal match with Clayton Valley’s Savannah Talmadge on Saturday.
That set up a title match showdown with No. 2 seeded Ruby Julien-Newsom.
The No. 1 seed pinned Julien-Newsom in just 1:04 to become Glendora High School’s first state champion.
Two matches later, Juarez, the No. 1 seed at 140 pounds, went for her second consecutive state title.
Juarez pinned her first two opponents, and then she claimed a 4-0 decision over Kelly Meehan (Tokay) in the quarterfinal round.
She pinned Aila Duus (Freemont) in just 63 seconds in the semifinal and battled Esperanza’s Olivia Davis in the final.
Davis got an early takedown, and she never trailed in an 8-3 victory over Juarez.
Then came Charlene Smith.
Smith put together one of the most surprising and significant runs at state.
The unseeded San Dimas heavyweight pinned her first three opponents.
And that included a quarterfinal round stick of No. 2 seeded Noe Sedano of Justin Garza High School at 5:46.
Smith edged Olivia Ruacho (Central) to earn a spot in the heavyweight final against Camarillo’s Trinity Tipton.
Smith led a couple times during the match and almost pinned Tipton, but she fell just short, 8-6.
Of the six state placers, five were girls, and half of those six came from Northview High School.
Sumaya Lazaro went 4-2 to earn a fifth place showing.
The NHS junior pinned Julie Cimarusti (West Covina) in 54 seconds in their blood-round match on Saturday morning.
Lazaro went 3-1 vs Cimarusti in 2024-25.
Juarez, Lazaro and six other athletes helped Northview finish second among more than 250 girls’ programs.
Cimarusti, though, had an impressive sophomore run.
After losing 1-0 in the first round, she reeled off three consecutive wins, including two via pin fall.
One of her biggest accomplishments had to be a Valle Vista League final round victory over Lazaro.
San Dimas’ Aubreyelle Baeza placed seventh at 190 pounds.
Baeza went 3-2, including pins in the second and blood rounds.
She claimed a 10-6 decision victory over San Marcos’ Diana Duarte.
And she pinned Ria Chougule (Redondo Beach) at 1:05, and Elisa Boyd of Rocklin in just under four minutes.
Last but not least was the only male placer.
Elijah Butler is a 106-pound sophomore from Northview.
Butler went 3-2, and those two losses came at the hands of the eventual state champ (Samuel Sanchez) and fourth-place Jax Vang.
Butler pinned Lorenzo Reyes (San Pedro) at 1:33 in his first match, and he secured a 13-9 victory over Reedley’s Aiden Talavera in the second round.
Butler earned his podium spot with a 3-2 decision over JFK’s Cameron Jackson.
