Wrestling:

The odds of placing at the CIF State Championships after losing a first-round match on Thursday are about as remote as finding an honest politician.

But such is the case for West Covina sophomore, Julie Cimarusti.

Cimarusti lost a 1-0 decision to Poway’s Xiomara Gallego in Thursday’s first match.

She had to watch her fellow competitors get two and three rounds in before Cimarusti got back on the mat on Friday.

Cimarusti stuck Ayvah Reynoso of Monarche in 57 seconds.

She followed that with an 11-6 victory over Santa Ana’s Yanni Sanchez.

And Cimarusti finished her day with a pin of Cesar Chavez’s Natalin Hout in 3:16.

That sets up a dramatic blood-round match for Cimarusti tomorrow morning.

She’ll face fellow Valle Vista League competitor, Sumaya Lazaro.

Cimarusti and Lazaro will meet up for the fourth time this season.

Lazaro has a 2-1 head-to-head mark with the WCHS sophomore.

Cimarusti defeated Lazaro at VVL Finals, but Lazaro collected wins in the CIF-SS Individuals and a team dual.

No biggie.

The winner moves on and the loser’s season is over.
