Baseball:

It might have been Justin Peinado’s first start of his senior campaign.

But the Bishop Amat lefty looked to be in postseason form.

Peinado was just two outs away from a perfect game before San Dimas’ Aaden Escarcega singled in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Peinado would brush that off to get the final two outs of the Lancers’ 1-0 victory at SDHS.

Peinado didn’t issue a walk, and he struck out nine.

Of his 101 pitches, 70 went for strikes.

Peinado got eight of San Dimas’ starting nine on strikes at least once.

It wasn’t like the Saints didn’t get a solid effort from their three pitchers.

Josh Calcanas, Joseph Layva and Eleazar Santillan combined to surrender one run on two hits.

It was Jacob Campos’ solo HR in the top of the fourth inning that ended up being the difference.

Omar Arretche had the other Lancers base hit.

Calcanas got the loss after allowing one run on one hit over 3 1/3 innings.

He issued a pair of walks and fanned seven Amat batters.

Santillan went the final three innings, and he surrendered just one hit.

He didn’t allow a walk and struck out six.

Up next: Amat faces Arcadia, and SDHS gets Montebello on Saturday.

Quotable:

Bishop Amat senior, Justin Peinado: “I felt good today. I just wanted to get the guys in the in the dugout as quickly as possible to try to get something going. Overall, I just wanted to control my tempo and my environment. I was mostly fastball and changeup. I think I threw two curveballs.”
