Over the past few weeks, Maximus Barroso and CJ Gibson have really taken their games to the next level.
The boys from Chino began the 2024 season at 0-5.
Fast forward three weeks, and the Cowboys have won three consecutive games, and even more important, they were all Hacienda League conquests.
CHS took a 14-0 lead into the fourth quarter against South Hills at Covina District Field.
But Jacob Calderon’s boys in green and yellow fought all the way back.
With 1:11 to play, Messiah Luter scored on a 12-yard TD run to pull the Huskies to within an extra-point of tying the Cowboys.
And Brianna Castruita’s kick went off the right post before falling through, and the game was tied at 14-14.
Unfortunately for SHHS fans, Barroso hit Gibson on a 62-yard TD pass with 40 seconds to play.
South Hills made one last attempt and drove all the way to the Chino 26-yard line.
However, Gibson intercepted a pass in the end zone with seven seconds to play, and CHS was able to kneel and bleed the cock dry.
Barroso scored on a 14-yard run in the first quarter.
And he would help double the advantage after finding Gibson on a 60-yard TD pass.
Barroso threw for 230 yards and two scores, and he gained 25 yards on five carries.
Gibson caught six passes for 140 yards and two TDs.
Over the last three games, Gibson has tallied seven TDs and three interceptions.
Barroso has eight total TDs over that same stretch.
Anthony Gonzales finally got South Hills on the scoreboard.
Just 11 seconds into the fourth quarter, Gonzales rumbled in from three yards out.
Up next: The Cowboys travel to Diamond Bar on Thursday, and the Huskies meet up with Covina on Friday at Covina District Field.
