Football:
Since dropping their first five games by lopsided scores, Chino has found its rhythm, and the Cowboys have won two consecutive games to open Hacienda League play.
CHS trailed 7-0 and 14-7, but they’d outlast LAHS, 20-14, at Chino High School.
They’ll enter week eight tied with Covina and South Hills atop the league standings.
Los Altos got on the board first when Diego Castillo scored on an 11-yard TD run.
With 1:48 to play in the first quarter, Max Barroso hit CJ Gibson on a 20-yard TD pass.
LAHS regained the lead in an unusual way.
They fumbled the ball inside the Chino 1-yard line.
However, the Conquerors defensive lineman, Adan Licea, picked Barroso in the end zone for a 14-7 lead.
Gibson came to the rescue again, as he took a Los Altos pass 50 yards for a pick-six and the game was tied.
With just over 10 minutes to play in the game, Chino took the lead for good when Barroso and Gibson hooked up on a 10-yard scoring strike that was actually tipped before it got to Gibson.
How drastically has Joey LaRosa’s boys turned the page on that 0-5 start?
Well, the Cowboys were outscored 139-42 by Santa Monica, Summit, Aliso Niguel, Schurr and Don Lugo.
CHS didn’t even score until their third game.
But in the last two weeks, the Cowboys have victories over Walnut and Los Altos by a combined margin of 74-38.
Up next: Chino travels to Covina District Field on Thursday to battle South Hills.
The Huskies (4-3, 2-0) have overcome late deficits over the last two weeks, including Thursday’s 20-16 victory at Walnut.
