You know expectations are incredibly high when your ace tosses a five-hit shutout to clinch the first CIF-SS softball championship in school history, and reporters want to know why she only had one strikeout.

But such was the case for Bonita junior Brooklyn Shroyer, who shut out Tesoro, 6-0, in Friday’s CIF-SS Division 3 title game.

Shroyer didn’t issue a walk, scattered those five base hits and got plenty of help from her defense.

And none bigger than center fielder, Kali Blount.

Trailing 3-0, and with one out in the top of the sixth inning, the Titans had runners on first and second.

Kiara Cisneros hit a line-drive that looked destined to get down and to the wall, and had it done so, it would have pulled Tesoro to within one run of the Bearcats.

But Blount sprinted towards left-center, dove, and robbed the Titans of two runs.

The sixth inning would end on another line drive to center that Blount would put away.

Her teammates waited for the senior to get near the third-base bag on her way to the BHS dugout before mobbing Blount with high-fives.

Shroyer retired the side in the seventh inning to set off a celebration.

Peyton Roberge doubled, and Jenna Nelson, Loula-Rae McNamara, Allison Kloft and Cadence Gilliliand had one single apiece to account for the Tesoro offense.

Bonita’s offense obviously did more than enough.

The Bearcats got one in the bottom of the first inning, two in the second, and three in the bottom of the sixth to give Shroyer a massive six-run lead.

BHS knocked Tesoro starter Kennedy Hobson out of the game in the second inning.

Hobson allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits in her one-plus inning of work.

Loula-Rae McNamara would surrender three unearned runs in the sixth inning.

McNamara went five innings, didn’t issue a walk and struck out three Bonita batters.

Alyssa Doucette singled, tripled, scored twice and had an RBI.

Lauryn Ureno singled twice and had one RBI.

Aries Alonso, who entered the semifinal round with a batting average just north of the .200 mark, drove in five combined runs in victories over Temescal Canyon and Tesoro.

In Friday’s title win, Alonso’s two-run double in the bottom of the second extended the Bonita lead to 3-0.

Mireya Rico played a solid third base, and at the plate, she singled and scored two runs.

Sofia Ortiz singled and scored.

Blount went 2-for-4 on Friday.

Kailey Scott and Bryce Shroyer singled once each at Deanna Manning Stadium in Irvine.

Up next: Bonita won’t be in action until May 31st (Tuesday), but the Bearcats will find out their first-round opponent in the CIF State playoffs next week.
