If Friday’s season opener is any indication, Loyola has reason to be optimistic about its chances in 2021.
After five innings of play, Lakewood led the visiting Cubs, 5-2
But Loyola rallied for two runs in the top of the sixth, three in the seventh and four more in the decisive ninth inning.
That production earned the Cubs an 11-7, nine-inning victory against one of the Long Beach area’s most elite programs over the past 30-plus years.
Jared Stephenson was saddled with the loss after allowing four runs on five hits over his 1 2/3 innings of work.
Nick Valdez had a monster game for Loyola.
He walked, singled, doubled, homered, scored three times and drove in four runs.
Daniel Marquez walked twice, singled three times, scored a pair of runs and had one RBI from the leadoff spot.
Lane Johnson went 2-for-3, with a walk, single, double, two RBIs and he scored once.
Luca DiPaolo collected two hits, scored twice and had an RBI.
Alex Orman went 2-for-2 and scored once.
Carson Chavez singled twice and scored.
Ethan Haggarty contributed a pair of RBIs in the victory, while David Case walked and scored, and Kyle Hampton had an RBI single.
Tino Valdez, who served as the sixth and final Loyola pitcher on Friday, picked up the win with two perfect innings of relief, including three strikeouts.
Diego Gutierrez walked, singled, doubled, scored once and drove in a pair of runs for the Lancers.
James Provencio went 3-for-5 with two singles, a triple, two runs and an RBI.
Jared Stephenson finished with two singles and a pair of RBIs.
Loyola won’t get much rest, because they’re on their way Saturday morning to take on Mission Viejo.
