Had someone told you that Claremont went a combined 3-6 in Wednesday’s singles matches in their CIF-SS Division 1 opener against visiting Portola, one might conclude that the Wolfpack season came to an end.
But that wasn’t the case.
And it’s because the Claremont doubles teams won eight of their nine matches.
CHS edged Portola of Irvine, 11-7, and the season goes on.
The No. 1 doubles tandem of Elizabeth Gonzalez and Camila Fernandez won all three of their matches.
And Kaili Hernandez-Delila Vargas, who serve as the Wolfpack’s No. 2 doubles team, won matches by scores of 7-5, 7-6 and then claimed a second victory by tiebreaker at 5-5, because it was getting dark.
Claremont’s No. 3 , Martina De Nigris and Kareen Holstrom, won two of their three matches in the team victory.
Sydney La, who plays No. 1 singles, defeated Portola’s 1 and 2 singles by players by scores of 6-2 and 6-1, respectively.
La’s only defeat was a 6-4 setback at the hands of Prisha Rapur.
Irma Garcia went 1-2 in the No. 2 singles spot for the Wolfpack.
Up next: Claremont will battle Valencia on Friday in a second-round contvst.
The Vikings defeated Simi Valley, 13-5, in their first-round match.
