Village Christian spoiled La Salle’s season opener with a 54-25 beatdown of the Lancers.
The Crusaders scored two touchdowns in the game’s first 151 seconds and never trailed on Friday night.
Village Christian’s Nate Bennett toyed with the Lancers’ defensive backfield all night.
The sophomore quarterback threw for five scores and rushed for another, but it was his ability to extend plays with his legs that also allowed him to take advantage of the young and undersized Lancers.
Bennett had TD passes of 42 yards (Rhett Gordon), 10, 11 & 6-yard TD passes to Julius Oliver and a 9-yard strike to Rhett Gordon again.
Bennett also scored on a 6-yard run.
After each score it seemed, the Crusaders went for an onside kick, and they recovered a few, including just after taking the early 6-0 lead.
Village Christian was also able to pressure La Salle’s star quarterback Richie Munoz, and the Lancers had several errant snaps that didn’t help their cause.
But Munoz still found a way to show his stuff.
The Lancers junior threw 12 and 20-yard TD passes to Matthew Gamble.
Munoz also found Charles Adair on a 47-yard score and Rashaad Austin on an 81-yard TD.
La Salle coach Ben Buys is easily one of the best coaches in the SGV and while they have a lot of work to do, his Lancers will get better each week.
Up next: La Salle will travel to La Palma on Friday to take on Kennedy.
